Where Companies with Real Org Charts Hit a Wall
Agents don’t carry organizational tension
Last quarter, a client asked us to automate their content approval process. Seemed straightforward: marketing creates content, legal reviews for compliance, brand team checks for consistency. Three steps.
Except the “approval process” was actually a negotiation. Marketing wanted aggressive claims to hit conversion targets. Legal wanted conservative language to avoid regulatory risk. A Decision Framework for Business Leaders
Before deploying an agent on any workflow, run through these five questions in order. If you can’t answer one clearly, stop there — you’re not ready to deploy.
- Who are the stakeholders whose interests this agent must balance? If the answer is more than one person or department, you need a human operator, not just an agent.
- What does this agent have access to, and what can it modify? Write the access policy before you write the first prompt. If you can’t list the permissions, the agent shouldn’t exist yet.
- What happens when it encounters something it wasn’t trained on? Every agent will hit edge cases. Define the escalation path: what triggers a human review, who gets notified, and what happens to the workflow while it waits.
- What institutional memory does this workflow require? If the process depends on context that lives in people’s heads — past failures, informal agreements, client history — an agent will miss it. Build the knowledge base first, or accept the risk.
- How will you know if it’s drifting? Agents degrade silently. Without monitoring — accuracy scores, exception rates, output quality checks — you won’t know something went wrong until a client tells you.
